    What's new? Empty What's new?

Post by Whirlwynd Wed Jan 29, 2014 3:38 pm

I've seen other forums with general "hey what's going on with you guys" threads, so why not one here? Anything exciting happening in your life? Anything to rant about?

My day job is an industrial worker. I was laid off in September from the factory I worked for seven years, and moved halfway across the country afterwards. I just got word recently that I got a new job with a wage that will actually let me pay my bills. =D

But -- I've been doing temp work in the meantime and unfortunately I just had my first recordable accident. I got sprayed in the face with an industrial hot glue gun. Crying or Very sad Thankfully I wear glasses, or it would have gotten in my eye, but OUCH, man. I can't wait to leave this place behind, their safety standards are exceedingly lax. A couple weeks ago, a supervisor actually lit a small firecracker and threw it on the line to scare someone.  Shocked

Whoa...that sounds...super scary O.O I'm just a cashier, and our system is pretty good with mostly highschool and college kids, so the safety measures are monitored more closely. I mean, I've had my hand slammed in the drawer a few times but...ouch. Hot glue gun. Does not sound fun.

Ow, ow, hands in drawers >_< still no fun. Most of the places I've worked don't even allow high schoolers, they have signs at the entrances saying "no one under 18 permitted on the floor" and things like that.

Wow this place has kind of exploded since I was last here O_O awesome!

Hey Pocky, what do you want to study at the college?

Random thought -- I wonder if the internet will still be around in 50 years, and what it would be like.

The internet will definitely still be around in 50 years (assuming we don't destroy ourselves somehow) but I don't know if it'll be called the internet anymore. With the way things are going now, I suspect EVERYTHING will connect to the internet in some way or other. It's hard to say what that could mean, but it will be interesting to experience, I'm sure. Though with the current trend we'll probably be oh-so connected online with little to no physical interaction.

That's a really interesting topic to think about, actually. People in the 60's had their whole flying car fantasies of what today would be like, and in 50 years we'll probably seem as naive as they do now.

I originally wanted to do art and animation or be a part time manga artist.
I have the skills, just not the epic never ending imagination.

StoryboArdist, have you looked at the Society of Illustrators yet if you're interested in freelancing? I think you need to be an undergraduate university student at the youngest to get an actual membership, but they have TONS of great resources about freelancing, and the business behind freelancing ^^ (the requirement to even join the society is you need to make over 60% of your annual income from freelance work)

They have some books also from the SoI that give advice about freelancing, what to charge, how to go about contracts and protect yourself, etc. C:

Oh, hello! I didn't realize you were on this site haha.

Just out of curiosity, do you plan on doing any freelance work? Your stuff is really fantastic ^^ I was just wondering what you wanted to do~ I personally want to try and get into a studio once I finish college (since my skills aren't quite where they need to be for full-on freelance...although studio work may be even harder to get into ovo;; its a goal at least.)

Hello! :DD Yes I finally made an account here after lurking for so long C:

I've definitely considered it and my professors as illustrators have been trying to push me towards it (they're all successful freelancers themselves). I don't think I'd want to be a long term freelancer though. Freelance for me would be a short term thing to pay my college debt and save to get my own place/move out while I work on cleaning up my animation reel to send to studios.

But I'd rather join an animation studio, have Patreon going or run a Kickstarter to fund a team of animators, sound artists, etc., and eventually jump off, go to business school, and open my own animation studio ;u; I don't have any training in terms of animation, so I'm not sure how possible it will be for me to join a studio right away orz; But the life goal is to have my own studio C:

I'm telling you right now how wrong you are. Is 20 years on the older half of the spectrum in the fanime community? Sure. (I'm 22, don't take this personally) Is it old in the grand scheme of art as a career? Nnnnnnoooooo.

The idea of "If I'm not famous by the time I'm 21 I've failed as an artist" is not just wrong, but it's an incredibly toxic way of thinking. My professors always say that most artists aren't "successful" until they're 40. We see all of these "famous" 20 somethings or teenagers and think it's the norm. It's really, really not. It's never too late to go to school for art, one of my classmates is in her 60s.

    Ah. Okay cool.
    That's reassuring.
I think I'd really like to go into video game art, or art and animation.
Our local community college/colleges, offer art courses.
I was thinking of taking a hand in that.
My realism isn't that great. So I am currently working on that.

My art teacher taught us at a very college level, I took art 1, photo 1, then sculpture, and then sculpture 2.
    so haha xD
not that experience academically in art.
I am also not that competitive, I try to be, but I'm not always going to be the best. I will try though.
I'm just alittle scared, knowing that these other artist have more years of art academically under their belt but there is always art classes. So, I guess I could keep up.
I live in Virginia though, and it seems like the job market is very out of state.

I'm out of college for the summer so I've been focusing more on animation and my art. I'm also down in Long Island for a few months so that I can work at my Brother-in-laws restaurant to earn some extra cash. Other than that I'm not really doing much else right now.

@BloodyPocky I'm actually in college for art now (Specifically the major is called Digital Media and Animation). It's not very competitive (unless you really want your art in the school galleries, then you have to work super hard), and I wouldn't worry about some people having more years of art under their belt as there are usually several students who come in not knowing really anything about art. I'm sure they probably offer a foundations course which would get you used to some shading and figuring out some basic perspective and things like that. I say if you wanna go to college for art than go for it! There are probably some jobs in Virginia; I know when people think of animation they think of TV and Movies but there are always jobs for small companies who need people to make advertisements.

Well, I graduated high school, so I guess that's pretty important and exciting.
But now I don't really know what to do with myself.

I'm going to college in the fall for industrial design. So I'll be designing products or something when I get my degree. I particularly want to focus on vehicular design, however I'm going to keep my options open during college. After the first two years, you focus on general product design or vehicular production.
Other than that.... I'm supposed to be starting a job at my dad's workplace in a couple weeks. It's an internship position, but I'll be paid. Nobody else took it, so they gave it to me.
